From what I read in the past week, the best ...
1. Reading Hamilton from the Left - Really insightful piece on lessons that the political practices and philosophies of Alexander Hamilton hills for us today. Hamilton has long been one of my "favorite" historical figures, one I believe is vastly under recognized and underappreciated by us today. We focus so much history on Washington, Jefferson, Adams, and Madison without realizing that Hamilton was just as significant of a figure during the birth of our country, and in many ways, was viewed as more significant at the time. Another aspect I liked about this article is how it helps demonstrates the inappropriateness of modern Democrats using Jefferson's name for things (like Jefferson Jackson Day Dinners). Jefferson was a Democrat as defined by the time, which has little in common with the Left of today. As the article highlights, Hamilton would be much more appropriate, for a myriad of reasons.
2. Detection of mini black holes at LHC could demonstrate existence of parallel universes - The title indicates what the article is about, as scientists pose a new way to test for the existence of quantum mechanics' parallel universes using the Large Hadron Collider. I obviously don't understand all of the science, but the possibility of parallel universes as suggested by quantum mechanics has long intrigued and fascinated me. The philosophical implications are numerous and substantial, and fun to think about. I also think the article demonstrates the importance of scientific thinking - always probing, always seeking new ways to explain and understand our works and our existence.
3. Lead Prosecutor Apologizes for Role in Sending Man to Death Row - Probably the most powerful thing I read all week. Highlights the imperfections in our justice system, which should be expected because it is run be imperfect people who have all sorts of unfair pressures put on them from a variety of sources. This article was evocative and personal. You should go read it now. Seriously.
