Seismic shifts in our household. Just about two weeks ago, Maia started kindergarten. All the cliche sayings ring true - it really is amazing to think how fast time has gone, that our little girl is in a big kid school, going all day for 5 days a week. She has her big kid backpack; she has gym shoes she keeps at school for gym class. She has art class. She has music class. She has her "regular class." She has twenty-one other kids in her class (and almost 90 kindergarteners in total). Her world is about to get a whole lot bigger.

I think the processing of it all is still taking place for Jackie and me; its surreal at times. Part of that is because Jackie teaches kindergarten at the same school (Jackie's and Maia's classroom are just down the hall from each other). That dynamic - with Jackie have to prep herself for the usual frenzied and chaotic nature of the beginning of the school year - has made, I think, her ability to process it all more drawn out then it would otherwise. For me, I think the processing continues to take place because of the changes to routine (and I tend to be a very routine type of guy). School starts early, and even earlier for Maia as she eats breakfast at school (for a variety of reasons). Thus, she is out the door each morning around 7:15 a.m. My job rarely requires me to be out the door that early; and because it was never required, I rarely ever did so. Now, that is not an option; so my mornings, while still on a routine, feel like they have a much more frenetic and condensed routine. I'm still adjusting.
I think Maia has adjusted pretty well - not that she would ever let on that she hasn't. She has that raw excitement for school that's fun to see. Hopefully, it continues; we're 8 days in with a bunch to go. Lots of practice for that new routine to finally take shape.
