Disruptions (or Adventures in Parenthood)

I recently wrote about the new routine all of us in the household were attempting to get used to with Maia headed to kindergarten. We made it a couple weeks into that process before hitting some disruption.

This past Wednesday Maia had surgery to place tubes in her ears, to try to stem the significant number of ear infections the poor girl has (at least 7 this year; at least 5 last year). Maia did great at the hospital; she came home and was sleepy - expected after the anesthesia, but everything seemed as if it should.

Happy and ready to go.

By the time I got home from work that evening, though, we were starting to get concerned. Maia still seemed down for the count - unusual for our child who is always on the go. She had little interest in pretty much anything besides lying as still as possible. We took her temperature and found she had a pretty high fever; after some phone conversations with the doctor's office, and the ineffectiveness of bringing the fever down, we headed out to the emergency room. Eventually, through a variety of tests, it was learned that - completely unrelated to her ear surgery - Maia had a urinary tract infection (UTI). Maia received some more medicine which brought her fever down, we received other medicine to treat the UTI, and we were back on our way home.

The next day, Thursday, Maia stayed home with one set of grandparents, who thankfully were able to come and watch Maia. Maia was still overly tired - she ended up taking a multiple hour nap in the middle of the day - but there were no signs of a fever and she seemed back to her energetic and rambunctious self. Or so we thought.

Later that night, she suddenly seemed warm again and started shaking or shivering like she was cold. We took her temp and found that her fever had returned. Late evening calls were made and the other grandma was able to come to take care of Maia on Friday. [We are very fortunate to have the families that we do].

We've laid low since then, and it seems as if everything has passed. No fever on Friday or yesterday; and with the holiday tomorrow, we have an extra day for Maia to get her rest before starting the routine again. Here's to no more disruptions for awhile.

Some weeks, you just sleep where you fall.

The Assembly Line of Attention

Well, hello there (in my best Obi-Wan Kenobi impersonation). It's been over two years since I last posted anything here, and even then I...
