Book Review/Thoughts: A Burnable Book

A Burnable Book (John Gower, #1)A Burnable Book by Bruce Holsinger

My rating: 2 of 5 stars

Historical fiction based on a mystery of a dangerous book that contains prophecies on how the Kind of England dies/killed. Historical figures such as John Gower and Geoffrey Chaucer are primary characters, which had the potential to give the book a more "real" feel as historical fiction.

Ultimately, for me, the book fell a little short, and thus the two stars "it was ok" rating for Goodreads. The book's pacing was frustrating - it opened immediately with a tremendous scene, and gets you interested right away. But then it just takes too much time, in my opinion, in weaving itself through all the characters and world building to push the mystery forward. Perhaps, if one has a particular affection for 14th Century England, these parts will be more interesting. For me, they ruined the pace of the book and held it back.

It's not a poor book by any means, but my minimal interest in the actual history relevant to the story doomed the pacing of the novel for me.
