My rating: 3 of 5 stars Reading this book for the book group that I am in the library. Its a simple read, being more of a older child/young adult book. The story is told through a middle child in the Watson family, named Kenny. They live in Flint, although the Mom is originally from Alabama. Kenny narrate several humorous stories he experiences, particularly as the butt of his older brother's jokes. Eventually, due to the older brother's behavior, the Watsons take a trip to Birmingham so that the brother can spend the summer with his maternal grandmother. During that trip, they witness some of the violence associated with Civil Rights Movement, which centers as the book's climax. The book was an enjoyable read, and it will be interesting to see how the group at the library turns the discussion. But it was also fairly simple, with characters that weren't as developed as they could have been. Nothing great, but a quick, nice read that serves as a nice break from the heavier reading.
